Birkirkara (abbreviated as B'Kara or BKR) is a city in the eastern region of Malta. It is the second most populous on the island , with 24,356 inhabitants as of 2020. This is a list of monuments in Birkirkara, Malta, which are listed on the National Inventory of the Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands. [1] [2] The list includes graded scheduled properties from the Malta Scheduled Property Register maintained by Malta's Planning Authority. The latter are denoted by an ID beginning with the letters MSPR.
The Parish Church of St. Mary is located outside the historic centre of Birkirkara, and it was built on a hill so as to be protected from corsair attacks. In the medieval period, a church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and St. Helen existed on the site of the present church. A cemetery and two small chapels were found in the vicinity.
The Church of St Alphonse Liguori (Maltese: Il-Knisja ta' San Alfons Liguori) is a Roman Catholic church in Birkirkara, Malta. It was operated by the Discalced Carmelites, and was dedicated to Saint Alphonsus Maria de' Liguori. In 1854, the 600 or so residents of Saint Julian's appealed to the church authority, in order to make it a parish. The chapter at Birkirkara protested strongly against such an application and consequently the application was denied; but it was granted at reapplication in 1891. Dun Guzepp Scerri became the first parish priest. [9]
