FORV Sagar Sampada is a platform for interdisciplinary expeditions in and around the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone, and in International waters with participation from various institutions, from India and abroad. Built in Denmark, the vessel was commissioned at Mumbai in 1984.
To this date, the research vessel Sagar Sampada serves as the backbone of the MLR research activities co-ordinated by CMLRE. During the 9th five-year plan (1998-2002), the Centre co-ordinated the first systematic study of marine life along the Indian shelf waters, along the eastern and western coasts of India.
During the Budget speech, the finance minister asserted: "fishing and fishermen communities are closely aligned with farming and are crucial to rural India." The Economic Survey of India for the year 2018–19 had stressed on allied sectors and focused mainly on enhancing rural economy by strengthening Animal husbandry and Fisheries. [ 7 ]
The lake was once used for fishing and was also visited by migratory birds during winter. Today the lake gradually shrinking and only 40% of the area remains. [ 2 ] [ 7 ] The channels that used to connect the lake to various other water bodies are today blocked due to encroachment. [ 6 ]
