Starkville was founded in 1832 as the county seat of Lee county. [3] By 1837 a courthouse had been erected and by 1840 a jail was built. In 1856 the courthouse burned [4] and the county seat was moved to Webster but returned in 1858. In 1832 Starkville Academy was formed to educate the young people of the town.
Starkville is a hamlet located west of Fort Plain on NY 80, in the eastern part of the town of Stark in southern Herkimer County, New York, United States. Starkville is 4 miles (6.4 km) south of Trinidad and 8 miles (13 km) from the border with New Mexico at Raton Pass. [11] In the 19th century the Santa Fe Trail passed through the community. Starkville is adjacent to Interstate 25 and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad.
Starkville is the largest city in the Golden Triangle, which had a population of 175,474 in 2020, and the principal city of the Starkville-Columbus, MS CSA. Founded in 1831, the city was originally known as Boardtown for the local sawmilling operation there, but was renamed in 1837 to honor American Revolutionary War general John Stark .
