This is a list of U.S. states and territories ranked by their coastline length. 30 states have a coastline: 23 with a coastline on the Arctic Ocean, Atlantic Ocean (including the Gulf of Mexico and Gulf of Maine), and/or Pacific Ocean, and 8 with a Great Lakes shoreline.
The data were taken from the American Human Development Report. The territories of the United States are listed separately (they were not included in Measure of America's report); the territories data is from a different source (based on United Nations Development Programme), which uses a different numbering system. National seashores are located in ten states and national lakeshores are in two other states. Florida, North Carolina, and Michigan each have two. The largest national seashore or lakeshore is Gulf Islands, at over 137,000 acres (550 km 2); the smallest is Fire Island, at 19,579 acres (79.23 km 2).
