Melbourne (/ ˈ m ɛ l b ər n / MEL-bərn) is a city in Brevard County, Florida, United States.It is located 72 miles (116 km) southeast of Orlando and 175 miles (282 km) northwest of Miami.
Melbourne Beach is Brevard County's oldest beach community. In 1879, a hotel, the Oak Lodge, was built for researchers and naturalists on a 164-acre (66 ha) location near Aquarina. [4] In 1921, the Melbourne Causeway was built, connecting Melbourne Beach to the mainland via the town of Indialantic. In 1923, it was incorporated as a town.
[10] [9] Later, Brown became a relator working at the Brown House Hotel on New Haven Avenue in downtown Melbourne. [9] As the area developed, the house served as a hotel across from the Melbourne Beach Casino, which became a focal point for the town, and was used as the petty officers club for the Naval Air Station Melbourne during World War II.
On the western side, the road continues through downtown Melbourne as Strawbridge Avenue. Each July 4, the bridge is closed for a fireworks show. There are two bridges in Melbourne, the Melbourne Causeway and the Eau Gallie Causeway ( SR 518 ) With the latter being named for the old city of Eau Gallie , which merged with Melbourne in 1969.
