Factor V Leiden (rs6025 or F5 p.R506Q [1]) is a variant (mutated form) of human factor V (one of several substances that helps blood clot), which causes an increase in blood clotting (hypercoagulability).
Coagulation factor V (Factor V), also less commonly known as proaccelerin or labile factor, is a protein involved in coagulation, encoded, in humans, by F5 gene. [5] In contrast to most other coagulation factors, it is not enzymatically active but functions as a cofactor . [ 5 ]
APC resistance is the inability of protein C to cleave Factor Va and/or Factor VIIIa, which allows for longer duration of thrombin generation and may lead to a hypercoagulable state. This may be hereditary or acquired. [4] The best known and most common hereditary form is Factor V Leiden, which is responsible for more than 95% of cases. [5]
The minor ("type 2") thrombophilias are much more common. Factor V Leiden is present in 5% of the population of Northern European descent, but much rarer in those of Asian or African extraction. In people with thrombosis, 10% have factor V Leiden. In those who are referred for thrombophilia testing, 30–50% have the defect.
[5] [9] The initiation phase accounts for less than 5% of total thrombin generation, making aPTT-based tests poorly indicative of hypercoagulability in general. [ 10 ] [ 11 ] The aPTT-based assay is more sensitive to levels of prothrombin and factor VIII , whereas the ETP-based test is more sensitive to levels of tissue factor pathway inhibitor ...
A new review reports that nine people taking semaglutide and tirzepatide — the active ingredient in GLP-1 medications — experienced vision issues, including three potentially blinding eye ...
In fact, Factor V Leiden is the most common cause of inherited thrombosis. [26] Heterozygous factor V Leiden is present in approximately 5% of the white population in the United States and homozygous factor V Leiden is found less than 1% of this population. [27]
In the 1980s, the median home price in the U.S. was $47,200 ($170,000 adjusted for inflation). In 2025, the median home price is $400,000, and wages are failing to keep up.
