Mille Lacs Lake (/ m ə ˈ l æ k s / mə-LAX, also called Lake Mille Lacs or Mille Lacs) is a large, shallow lake in the U.S. state of Minnesota. It is located in the counties of Mille Lacs, Aitkin, and Crow Wing, roughly 75 miles north of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. Mille Lacs means "thousand lakes" in French.
The name Mille Lacs, meaning "thousand lakes" in French, was associated with Mille Lacs Lake in the region. (Its full name in French was Grand lac du pays des mille lacs.) This is the largest lake in the Brainerd Lakes Area, which French colonists and traders called the "Region of the Thousand Lakes" (Pays des mille lacs). [5]
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Isle has an area of 3.13 square miles (8.11 km 2), of which 2.70 square miles (6.99 km 2) are land and 0.44 square miles (1.14 km 2), or 13.9%, are water.
