In the opening round of the tournament they played a 26–8 Ball State Cardinals team that was making their NCAA tourney debut. Ball State would go on to win the game 71–55 making history. The Lady Volunteers had never lost in the first two rounds of the tournament, going 42–0 through the years.

As in 2008, the championship rounds were contested at the Health and Sports Center on the campus of the University of Nebraska at Kearney in Kearney, Nebraska .

The 2008 SEC women's basketball tournament was held on March 6–9, 2008, in Nashville, Tennessee at the Sommet Center. Tennessee won the tournament and received the SEC's automatic bid to the 2008 NCAA tournament .
