The rudder may also be called upon to counter-act the adverse yaw produced by the roll-control surfaces. If rudder is continuously applied in level flight the aircraft will yaw initially in the direction of the applied rudder – the primary effect of rudder. After a few seconds the aircraft will tend to bank in the direction of yaw.
The asymmetric lift causes asymmetric drag, which causes the aircraft to yaw adversely. To correct the yaw, the pilot uses the rudder to perform a coordinated turn. In a multi-engined aircraft, the loss of thrust in one engine can also cause adverse yaw, and here again the rudder is used to regain coordinated flight.
The flight deck control has three positions: off, automatic ("armed"), and manual (rarely used). On landing approach "automatic" is selected and, on touchdown, a sensor called a weight-on-wheels switch signals the lift dumpers to be raised. The flight control spoilers are also raised as additional lift dumpers.

Flight 517 was a scheduled Eastwind Airlines passenger flight from Trenton-Mercer Airport in Trenton, New Jersey to Richmond International Airport in Richmond, Virginia. The flight was operated using a Boeing 737-200 (registration number N221US). On June 9, 1996, Flight 517 was operated by Captain Brian Bishop and First Officer Spencer Griffin.
The pilot then uses the rudder to rotate the aircraft around its yaw axis until it has turned 180deg and is pointing straight down, facing the direction from which the aircraft came. The aircraft gains speed, and the pilot continues and returns to level flight, travelling in the opposite direction from which the maneuver began.
