The Tucson Unified School District has a number of policies that encourage a healthy lifestyle for its students and employees. The District Wellness Program states that, “Schools shall implement a comprehensive, integrated program for these two components of a coordinated school health program: nutrition and physical activity”. Tucson High is the oldest operating public high school in Arizona. On April 10, 1906, the Arizona Board of Regents resolved that as of September 1, 1906, students from all Arizona cities, having a population of more than 5,000, must have completed the 9th grade before enrolling in the University of Arizona Preparatory Department.
In 1982, the TUSD governing board renamed Special Projects High School to its current name University High School. The name represents the AP classes offered at the school. Around this time, parents complained about the discrimination of the school's enrollment of less than 12 percent minority students.
The school educated about 950 students from grades 9 to 12. Graduating classes usually consisted of 300 students. In recent years, enrollment at Santa Rita has dropped. As of the 2023 school year, enrollment was at 392. [3] In the 1984–85 school year, it was honored as a Blue Ribbon school. [4]
Students are encouraged to attend a number of retreats throughout their time at Salpointe, culminating in the Kairos retreat experience during their junior or senior year. [33] Students at Salpointe also attend periodic all-school mass, worshipping the Holy Trinity under the direction of the school chaplain.
