The Dee Stadium was one of two buildings to host a championship game in the tournament's inaugural season. The Xcel Energy Center hosted the WCHA tournament final from 2001 to 2013. The Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) is the oldest active NCAA Division I ice hockey-only conference beginning in 1959–60, and based in Denver, Colorado.
WCHA member teams won a record 38 men's NCAA hockey championships, most recently in 2011 by the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. A WCHA team also finished as the national runner-up a total of 28 times. [4] WCHA teams also won the first 13 NCAA women's titles, which were first awarded in 2001. [5]
Michigan State also won its 1986 and 2007 national championships after leaving the WCHA. The 2020 WCHA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament was the 61st tournament in conference history. It was scheduled to be played between March 6 and March 21, 2020 on campus locations. On March 12, 2020, the WCHA announced the remainder of the tournament was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. [1]
The four automatic qualifiers were seeded according to pre-tournament finish. The ECAC champion was seeded as the top eastern team while the WCHA co-champion that finished highest in the regular season was given the top western seed. The second eastern seed was slotted to play the top western seed and vice versa.
The 2010 WCHA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament was played between March 12 and March 20, 2010 at five conference arenas and the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. North Dakota received the Broadmoor Trophy as the tournament's champions, and was awarded the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament.
