The Concha y Toro Vineyard was founded by Don Melchor de Santiago Concha y Toro, ex-Minister of Finance, and his wife, Emiliana Subercaseaux, in 1883. [5] To start the winery, he brought grape varieties from the Bordeaux region in France: Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Merlot, and Carménère.
DNA evidence has shown Cabernet Sauvignon is the result of crossing two other Bordeaux grape varieties— Cabernet franc and Sauvignon blanc— which has led grapevine historians, or ampelographers, to believe that the grape originated in Bordeaux. Early records indicate that the grape was widespread in the Médoc region during the 18th century.
The red grapes were Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Pinot noir etc. and the white grapes were Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Sémillon, Riesling etc. Thus the winery contributed to change Chilean wine history, [ 2 ] [ 3 ] and the founder is referred to as the father of modern Chilean winemaking .
