Goodyear Polyglas GT tires were standard equipment on 1970 AMC AMXs [1] The Goodyear Polyglas tire was a bias-belted tire announced in 1967 by Goodyear. "Polyglas" was a registered trademark. [2] The tire combined some characteristics of both bias-ply and radial-ply tires.
In 1989, Goodyear planned to roll out its new radial tires at the Daytona 500. Ideally, the race would definitively prove radial tires' superiority to Hoosier's bias-plys. But Dale Earnhardt and Elliott experienced tire failures during practice, breaking Elliott's wrist, and Goodyear withdrew the radial tires from Daytona. [13]

In this design, the cord plies are arranged at 90 degrees to the direction of travel, or radially (from the center of the tire).
Starting in 1972 tires were specified by load rating, using a letter code. In practice, a higher load rating tire was also a wider tire. In this system a tire had a letter, optionally followed by "R" for radial tires, followed by the aspect ratio, a dash and the diameter – C78-15 or CR78-15 for bias and radial, respectively.
