Brokenhead 4 serves as the main reserve of Brokenhead Ojibway Nation. It is situated along Manitoba Highway 59 (PTH 59), with Winnipeg located 82 km (51 mi) to its south and Grand Beach , Patricia Beach, and Victoria Beach to its north, all along PTH 59.
The Southeast Resource Development Council (SERDC) is a tribal council in eastern Manitoba, Canada, representing 8 First Nation communities located to the south and east of Lake Winnipeg. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] Seven of the eight band governments of SERDC are signatories to Treaty 5 , with one ( Brokenhead ) being a signatory to Treaty 1 .
PTH 59 is a four-lane at-grade expressway from Provincial Road 210 south of Île-des-Chênes, through Winnipeg, to the Brokenhead Ojibway Nation, except for a two-kilometre section of six-lane road between the North Perimeter Highway (PTH 101) and Provincial Road 202.
The Brokenhead is navigable by canoe for much of its length. [6] [7] Fishers based in the Brokenhead Ojibway Nation use the lower reaches of the river to access Lake Winnipeg. [8] Brokenhead River Ecological Reserve preserves 66 hectares (160 acres) of river-bottom forest adjacent to the river in the Rural Municipality of Brokenhead. [9]
