For the 2005 S.League season, Paya Lebar Punggol FC played their home games at the stadium. From 2006 to 2011, it was home to the newly merged club, Sengkang Punggol FC a.k.a. Hougang United. Sengkang Sports Centre was built as part of a plan to improve amenities in Pasir Ris-Punggol Group Representation Constituency and Sengkang New Town, costing S$1 billion. [4] [5] The People's Association and the then Singapore Sports Council were involved in the planning of the sports complex, and went ahead with the project despite Singapore's economic recession in the early 2000s.
Financial difficulties then forced Sengkang Marine out of the S.League in 2004, and Paya Lebar-Punggol Football Club took its place in 2005, finishing the season as wooden-spoonist. The two clubs then merged their resources from 2006 to 2010 to form Sengkang Punggol Football Club , finishing no higher than 10th.

The Island Wide League is a semi-professional tournament which made up the 4th tier of the Singapore football league system. It is a SFL qualification tournament whereby the top 2 team of the tournament get an automatic qualification into SFL the following season.

Paya Lebar Punggol merged with the returning Sengkang Marine to form Sengkang Punggol. Gombak United also returned to the league after pulling out in 2002. Sporting Afrique were a foreign team made up of players from four different African countries – Kenya, Nigeria, Cameroon and Ghana. Sinchi went out of operation at the end of 2005 season.
