Provincial medical entrance exams included the MDCAT conducted by the University of Health Sciences, Lahore in Punjab and Balochistan before the NMDCAT. It was implemented in 1998 as the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) on the initiative of the then chief minister of Punjab Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif to counter replete cheating in HSSC exams at the time.
It is a government-funded medical college and the selection is on the basis of merit. The college is recognized by the Pakistan Medical Commission . [ 2 ] [ 3 ] This medical college was established in 2012.
As of January 2019, there are a total of 114 medical colleges in Pakistan, 44 of which are public and 70 private. [1] All but two colleges are listed in International Medical Education Directory. As per Pakistan Medical Commission 2021 database, there are 176 medical colleges in Pakistan (Medical and Dental Colleges).

The college was established in 1962 through an act of parliament, under the leadership of the then-Minister of Health Wajid Ali Khan Burki. [1] In 1965, the Library of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan was established and since its inception has acquired latest medical literature and served as a focal point in supporting postgraduate medical education.
To date, following qualifications are eligible for registration with General Medical Council (GMC) of the United Kingdom (UK) without any other exam: [4]. Anaesthesia; In addition, Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC) recognizes this qualification for registration as a specialist, and in Saudi Arabia, as a consultant in any specialty.
In Pakistan, the program of Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) is pursued rather than the Doctor of Medicine (MD). [4] From 1977 till 1997, the Army Medical College was affiliated with the biology department of the Quaid-i-Azam University (Qau) for its degree accreditation. [4]
Apart from MBBS offered by the University, undergraduate programs like DPT, PharmD, Bachelor of Nursing, BS Public Health are offered. [5] [6] [7] Postgraduate courses in medicine, anaesthesiology, public health, and community medicine are also being offered since 2004.
