Check the float on the passenger side. Edelbrocks have a float on each side of the carb. Pull the 8 screws that hold the top on and check the float level. The easiest way to set an Edelbrock float is to use a 5/16" drill bit and lay it between the float edge and the airhorn gasket.

It starts instantly, pulls 17” vacuum at a 700 rpm idle, and pulls cleanly to 5800. More timing makes it harder to start when hot and cuts top end power noticeably. From dead cold, it starts instantly and will idle on it’s own within 1-2 minutes, with ambient temps anywhere from 50 to 90F.
I'm having the same running rich problem on my E-Brock 1406. As JimM said above, I pulled the top off the carb and the floats were way out of adjustment. Per the E-Brock manual, the proper float level is 7/16" with the airhorn inverted and 1" max of float drop with the airhorn upright.
Edelbrock carb starting problem. I recently installed an Edelbrock Performer manifold and Edelbrock 600cfm carb on my stock 327/210. Starts right up when cold, but when hot it takes a long time to start to the point where I'm afraid the battery is going to die. Only when I hold the pedal to the floor will it start.
