I have the Rossi M-92 chamber for .45 Colt that I bought at the gun show earlier this year, but after hunting season, so I haven't used it yet for deer hunting, but I plan to this year. I've shot cast lead cowboy ammo and hand loads using 250 and 300 grain Hornady XTPs through it.
There is a thread on sixgunner regarding the use of a 30-30 vs. a 45 Colt levergun for deer hunting. The poster limited the maximum shot distance to 150 yds.. Thus far, the responders are stating to only use the 30-30 at that distance. When I shoot regularly, I am boiler room accurate to 75 yards with a solid field rest using my 45 colt Mnt.

I have a Bisley Hunter in .44 and a BH in .357 (both SS). I have sighted in loads for both for deer season. The .357 is a XTP 158gr. at 1300fps for 25yrds. and less ranges, and .44 has 260gr. WFNGC at about 1100fps for shots to 50yrds. (my self limit). I'm hunting out of one of those port-a-potty like permanent blinds.
Just bought a new Marlin 444S. Any ideas on the best scope/rings/mount for 50-100 yards? Most of my shooting will be target and occasional big deer hunting. But in any case, looking for for a good scope set-up that will work well in the 50-100 yard range and will be durable enough for loads in the 300-320 gr.range. Thanks, Dan
And I've loaded .30-30/Speer 130gr FP's for myself and others for deer, and that's a combination that would surprise a lot of deer hunters. Recoil is way less than a 170gr bullet. If manually cycling the 7-08 isn't a problem, there is always Trail Boss or Unique reduced loads for practice, and full powered Nosler Partition or Speer Grand Slam ...
Well, my experience is limited, but I did shoot one small whitetail this autumn with my .357 Magnum carbine, using a Lyman Keith 170 grain SWC and a load of 2400. At 100 yards the load punched straight through on a broadside shot, and made a good sized hole through the lungs. It ran about 20 yards and piled up.
