Hyundai Theta 2.0L Engine Problems and Reliability. I am thinking about a 2019 or 2020 SanteFe utimate and have been doing some reading about the theta II engine issues. They burn oil, numerous recalls because of failures, noisiy at start, only good for around 150,000 miles. It sounds like they are junk.
All maintence done, oil changes every 5K Miles. no coincidence that 2.4 and 2.0 have extended warranties but 3.3liter is miraculously reliable. 2 dealerships quoted replacing engine. $12,000 ($9k engine and $3k labor) This is for an engine with 100k miles on it and is the only one in the Midwest available.

The knock sensor is essentially a small microphone bolted to the engine. It's 'tuned' to pick up the frequencies generated by engine knock. When it hears engine knock, it tells the car's computer which in turn retards the timing and hopefully eliminates the knock. So yes, a faulty knock sensor can cause knock.

2456 posts · Joined 2010. #17 · Jan 14, 2019. Yep, the MD series for the US market is a 1.8L MPI engine. Where it got weird was the GD (Elantra GT) series changed engines after the first year (2013) in the US market and went from the 1.8L MPI engine to the 2.0L GDI. Big improvement in performance.
Last year my 2014 Hyundai Sonata broke down due to the awful GDI engine burning through oil like a flame through dry kindling. After few oil consumption tests and the dealer submitting their suggestion for an engine replacement to Hyundai, the Hyundai warrantee department determined it is acceptable to lose a quart of oil every 1,000 miles.
