McLean County is a U.S. county in the east central region of Illinois, and is the largest county by land area in the state. According to the 2020 Census, it had a population of 170,954. [1] Its county seat is Bloomington. [2] McLean County is included in the Bloomington–Normal, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Downtown Bloomington and the McLean County Courthouse & Square are seen in this 1914 image. The McLean County Courthouse housed the McLean County Circuit Court from 1903 to 1976. The original construction was completed in 1868 at a cost of $461,640. [2] On June 19, 1900, a fire destroyed many of the buildings in the square and the courthouse.
In 1837, Congress created the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, placing it in Chicago, Illinois and giving it jurisdiction over the District of Illinois, 5 Stat. 176. [5] On February 13, 1855, by 10 Stat. 606, the District of Illinois was subdivided into Northern and the Southern Districts. [5]
