Smyth was first elected to the Santa Clarita City Council in 2000 and re-elected in 2004. He served as Mayor in 2003 and again in 2005. [1] In 2006, he was elected to the California State Assembly, succeeding Keith Richman who was term limited. Smyth was re-elected in 2008 and 2010, leaving in 2012 due to term limits. [1]
