Embu County is a county in the Mt Kenya region in Kenya. [2] As of 2024 its estimated population is 608,599. [ 3 ] The county borders Kirinyaga to the west, Kitui to the east, Tharaka Nithi to the north and Machakos to the south.
Embu Airport, (IATA: n/a, ICAO: HKEM), is located in Embu County, in the town of Embu.Located about 6.2 kilometres (3.9 mi), by road, southeast of Embu's central business district, the airport lies to the immediate northeast of Don Bosco Boys' Secondary School, on Embu-Kiritiri Road.
The province was principally inhabited by the Meru, Kamba, Embu, and several pastoralist communities. In 1979, its population was 2.7 million; in 1999, 4,631,779 (according to the 1999 census) and in 2009 the province would have had a population of 5,668,123. [2] In terms of area, it was the second largest province at (140,698.6 km 2) in Kenya.
Before the new constitution of Kenya that came into force on 27 August 2010, Kenya was divided into eight provinces (see map). The provinces, excluding Nairobi Province, were subdivided into 46 districts as at 1992, which were further subdivided into 262 divisions.
