Gander (originally Pal, and also known as Sergeant Gander) was a Newfoundland dog who served as the mascot of the Royal Rifles of Canada during World War II.He was killed in action during the Battle of Hong Kong in 1941, and was posthumously awarded the Dickin Medal, the "animals' Victoria Cross", in 2000 for his deeds in the course of that battle.
