The SSEi received a new Eaton M90-supercharged L67 engine, producing 240 hp (179 kW) and 280 lbf⋅ft (380 N⋅m) optional on the SSE trim. The engine was used from 1995 until it was retired from the Bonneville in 2003.
The new generation was powered by updated Series II variants of the 3800 and as before, only Ultra models were supercharged. The base trim featured a hood ornament while the Ultra had a less conspicuous tri-shield inset on the upper edge of the grille.

The base 3.1 L v6 engine on the SE was the only engine carried over from the previous generation. The GT 3.4 L V6 was replaced by a Buick 3.8 L V6. This engine, in 3800 Series II form, was an option on the SE with 195 horsepower. The 3800 Series II was on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 1995–1997.
