Capri pants were introduced by fashion designer Sonja de Lennart in 1948, [4] and were popularized by her [citation needed] and English couturier Bunny Roger. [5] The name of the pants is derived from the Italian isle of Capri, where they rose to popularity in the late 1950s and early 1960s. [6]
Leggings prominently returned to women's fashion in the 1960s, drawing from the form-fitting clothing of dancers. With the widespread adoption of the synthetic fibre Lycra and the rise in popularity of aerobics , leggings came to further prominence in the 1970s and 1980s, and eventually made their way into streetwear . The George brand was founded in 1989 as a partnership between English fashion designer George Davies and Asda. Asda has its own range of clothing known as George, which was created and trialled in selected stores in 1989, and officially launched and rolled out to the main superstore estate in 1990. Asda CEO Archie Norman commented that Davies grasped the fact that the line had to be based on value, and be a distinct brand name on its own. The George brand and range was developed by Davies's company Red Creative, set up to provide full clothing retail solutions [clarification needed] through a team of designers and marketeers.
In the 1960s this style was used for women's and girls' stirrup pants. They were popular for several years as shown in clothing catalogs of the day, such as J.C.Penney, Sears, and Montgomery Ward. Stirrup pants became a popular casual fashion for women of all ages in Europe and America from the mid-1980s to the mid-to-late 1990s.
