True West began publication in 1953 under founder Joe Small of Austin, Texas. The idea for True West originated from a monthly feature in Small's first publication, Sporting Magazine. The magazine's recurring "Bad Man" article, about outlaws of the West, was the feature that generated the most reader mail and interest. [1]
Trailer Life was founded in July 1941 as Western Trailer Life, in California. [2]In 1958, Los Angeles advertising executive Art Rouse purchased the magazine. [2] [3]In 1992, Trailer Life Enterprises became part of the umbrella company Affinity Group Inc., since renamed Good Sam Enterprises.
Credited as the founder of the Good Sam Club is Art Rouse, [4] founder of TL Enterprises, a California-based publishing company responsible for Trailer Life magazine [5] and MotorHome magazine. Rouse and his two sons acquired the organization in 1968 and further developed member benefits and RV-related services for which the club is known.
