A number of oil and gas fields exist in the eastern portion of Bass Strait, in what is known as the Gippsland Basin. Most large fields were discovered in the 1960s, and are located about 50 to 65 km (30 to 40 mi) off the coast of Gippsland in water depths of about 70 m (230 ft).
Beagle Commonwealth Marine Reserve is a 2,928 km 2 marine protected area within Australian waters located in Bass Strait off the coast of Victoria and near Tasmania's Flinders Island. The reserve was established in 2007 [ 2 ] and is part of the South-east Commonwealth Marine Reserve Network .

Near the mouth of the Latrobe River is the main town Sale, which has a population of about 19,600 (including Wurruk and Longford), a nearby air force base, and as a centre for the offshore gasfields in Bass Strait. It was one of the earliest settled areas of Gippsland, whose early economy was aided by the presence of a river port.
