Lion, a Newfoundland Dog is an 1824 oil painting by the English artist Edwin Landseer. [1] [2] [3] It portrays a variant of the traditional Newfoundland dog, now known as the Landseer dog due to its use in this painting and others by Landseer including A Distinguished Member of the Humane Society in 1831. This work was commissioned by Lion's owner.
Čhetáŋ Sápa (Black Hawk) [tʃʰɛtə̃ sapa] (c. 1832 – c. 1890) was a medicine man and member of the Sans Arc or Itázipčho band of the Lakota people. [1] He is most known for a series of 76 drawings that were later bound into a ledger book that depicts scenes of Lakota life and rituals.

The dog reclines on a quayside, while water ripples against the sea-wall. The shadow of the dog is cast on his own flank. [9] The painting was described by The Art Journal as being "one of the best and most interesting publications of the year", and "Mr Thomas Landseer's first great effort in this department of the art." [10]
The painting has also been used on the label of tins of Baxter's Royal Game soup in the UK, [14] and as the backdrop for the front desk of the Rosebudd Motel from the Canadian television sitcom, Schitt's Creek. The deer shown in the painting was used as part of a collage on the sleeve of the 1983 Electric Light Orchestra album Secret Messages.
