Chapter 18 of the Gospel of Matthew contains the fourth of the five Discourses of Matthew, also called the Discourse on the Church or the ecclesiastical discourse. [1] [2] It compares "the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven" to a child, and also includes the parables of the lost sheep and the unforgiving servant, the second of which also refers to the Kingdom of Heaven.
Jesus' parents Mary and Joseph were betrothed (Matthew 1:18–20; Luke 1:27; 2:5). His birth was a virgin birth conceived by the Holy Spirit. Angels announced Jesus' birth, his name, his role as the Messiah (being a descendant of King David and the son of God), and his mission to save his people from sin (Matthew 1:21; Luke 1:77; 2:11,30).
Matthew has 600 verses in common with Mark, which is a book of only 661 verses. The New King James Version (NKJV) organises this chapter as follows: The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard (Matthew 20:1–16) Jesus a Third Time Predicts His Death and Resurrection (Matthew 20:17–19; Mark 10:32–34; Luke 18:31–34) Greatness is Serving (Matthew 20:20–28) Two Blind Men Receive Their Sight (Matthew 20:29–34).
The calling of the disciples is a key episode in the life of Jesus in the New Testament. [2] [3] It appears in Matthew 4:18–22, Mark 1:16-20 and Luke 5:1–11 on the Sea of Galilee. John 1:35–51 reports the first encounter with two of the disciples a little earlier in the presence of John the Baptist.
Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 18:1–10) The word translated as converted in the King James Version [1] (Greek: στράφητε, straphēte) literally means 'turn'.
