The flagship store on Oxford Street began as a drapery shop, opened by John Lewis in 1864. In 1905 Lewis acquired a second store, Peter Jones in Sloane Square, London.His eldest son, John Spedan Lewis, began the John Lewis Partnership in 1920 after thinking up the idea during his days in charge of Peter Jones.

The business further grew in 1961, when John Lewis purchased the department store next door, Bon Marche, from its owners the Liverpool Co-operative Society and merged it into George Henry Lee. Bon Marche had previously been formed in the late 19th century by David Lewis, of Lewis's, but had been sold as a failing business to the Co-op in the 1950s.
At the time of John Lewis' takeover, the store was the largest shop in Berkshire. With the business continuing to grow, however, the shop eventually became seen as too small and in need of expansion. Ambitious redevelopment plans were announced in 1975 and a large-scale model of the re-envisaged Heelas was put on display in the shop. [ 2 ]
John Lewis was born in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, England, and became an orphan at the age of seven.He was brought up by an aunt, Miss Ann Speed. [1] Having served as an apprentice to a local draper from the age of fourteen, he moved to London to become a silk buyer in the capital, working in Peter Robinson's Department Store at Oxford Circus by the time he was 20.
Robert Sayle was a department store in Cambridge, England, founded by Robert Sayle (1816–1883). In 1934, it was purchased by Selfridges, who sold it to the John Lewis Partnership in 1939. In 2007, it reopened as a John Lewis store.
