The Diocese of Austin (Latin: Dioecesis Austiniensis) is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory, or diocese, of the Catholic Church comprising 25 counties of Central Texas in the United States. The diocese estimates a population of over 625,000 Catholics.
When the Diocese of Austin was created in 1948, St. Mary's became the cathedral of the newly formed diocese. In recognition of St. Mary's Irish roots, the Celtic Cultural Center of Texas holds an annual Christmas concert at the cathedral, highlighting traditional Irish and Scottish music played by noted artists. Latin liturgical rites, or Western liturgical rites, is a large family of liturgical rites and uses of public worship employed by the Latin Church, the largest particular church sui iuris of the Catholic Church, that originated in Europe where the Latin language once dominated. Its language is now known as Ecclesiastical Latin.
