The museum has 1 km (1 mi) of electric track, which was previously a part of the Heathcote Junction to Bendigo railway line. The museum initially operated a horse tramway, utilising restored and recreated horse tramway carriages. Electric tram services commenced in the mid 1980's and operated until 2009.

In February 2010 the Bendigo Tramways received $3.1 million to fund the redevelopment of the depot, workshop and administration building, as well as landscaping and heritage conservation, and safety works. This would mean a doubling in the capacity of the workshop, which also restores parts for heritage trams around the world. [14]

The depot closed as a running depot on 13 February 1965, [1] [2] but was kept in use for training and uniform manufacture until the 1990s. In 1996, the depot was added to the Victorian Heritage Register. [3]
