getopts is a built-in Unix shell command for parsing command-line arguments. It is designed to process command line arguments that follow the POSIX Utility Syntax Guidelines, based on the C interface of getopt. The predecessor to getopts was the external program getopt by Unix System Laboratories.
Support for command history means that a user can recall a previous command into the command-line editor and edit it before issuing the potentially modified command. Shells that support completion may also be able to directly complete the command from the command history given a partial/initial part of the previous command.
The command supports several options via flags. It can be configured to issue a message using -p instead of needing to use the echo command. It can also superficially hide text using the -s flag, limit the amount of characters with -n, store the result in an array with -a, and timeout after a certain amount of time with -t. [2]
Ctrl+l : Clears the screen content (equivalent to the command clear). Ctrl+n : recalls the next command (equivalent to the key ↓). Ctrl+o : Executes the found command from history, and fetch the next line relative to the current line from the history for editing. Ctrl+p : recalls the prior command (equivalent to the key ↑).
getopt is a system dependent function, and its behavior depends on the implementation in the C library. Some custom implementations like gnulib are available, however. [6]The conventional (POSIX and BSD) handling is that the options end when the first non-option argument is encountered, and that getopt would return -1 to signal that.
