An academic seminar usually led by a different lecturer and on a different topic at each meeting or similarly to a tutorial led by students as is the case in Norway. A form of testing and assessing students' knowledge in the education system, mainly in universities. The Parliament of Scotland, called a "colloquium" in Latin records
The term seminar is also used to describe a research talk, often given by a visiting researcher and primarily attended by academics, research staff, and postgraduate students. Seminars often occur in regular series, but each seminar is typically given by a different speaker, on a topic of that speaker's choosing.
However, there are no commonly shared definitions even within disciplines for each event type. There might be no conceivable difference between a symposium, a congress or a conference. An elective course is one chosen by a student from a number of optional subjects or courses in a curriculum, as opposed to a required course which the student must take. While required courses (sometimes called "core courses" or "general education courses") are deemed essential for an academic degree, elective courses tend to be more specialized.
There are, however, general requirements for graduation. These start with foundation courses (a first year writing seminar, a first year research seminar, and multiple interdisciplinary seminars) and end with an intensive oral discourse called the "colloquium" which is held during a student's final semester. [7]
The colloquium is designed to be a rigorous course in reading, thinking and writing about literature and ideas. The goal of the courses are to develop habits of intellectual inquiry, mature understanding and effective communication that will serve the students through the college years and afterward. FHC is the foundational Honors Experience.
However, colloquium is different from AP classes because students are usually given more projects than students in AP classes. Students in colloquium also generally study topics more in depth and sometimes in a different way than students enrolled in AP classes do. Colloquium is a form that takes place in a traditional public school.
AP Seminar is the foundation course taken in 10th or 11th grade. It provides students the opportunity to develop critical thinking skills and prepare for university. Students explore real-world issues such as innovation, sustainability and technology. The assessment culminates in 2 through-course tasks and a final written exam. [1]
