The Australia Hotel was a hotel on Castlereagh Street, Sydney in New South Wales, Australia. From its opening in 1891 until its closure on 30 June 1971 and subsequent demolition, the hotel was considered "the best-known hotel in Australia", [ 1 ] "the premier hotel in Sydney" [ 2 ] and described itself as "The Hotel of the Commonwealth ". [ 3 ]
The site of the hotel was part of the original grant to John Wilde dated 1823. The earliest record of a Crown hotel on the site is in the Sands Directory and occurs in 1882 when a Mrs. Sarah Walsh is recorded as occupant (licensee) of the Crown Hotel. In 1883, the Crown Hotel is recorded as No. 160 with licensee John Bell.
The history of the hotel dates back to 1855, when the Wentworth Hotel was first opened as a boarding house on Lang Street further to the west in inner Sydney.
