Luffy reluctantly decides to abandon the ship. Usopp, having grown attached to the Merry, is unwilling to take this course of action and challenges Luffy's captaincy. Once defeated, Usopp decides to leave the Straw Hats, and the others go searching for a new ship.
Caesar tells his subordinates to release the poison gas into building R-66. Caesar consumes the gas and becomes a big monster. He then consumes his subordinates to intimidate Luffy. Usopp tells Caesar's subordinates that Luffy will never betray his crew. Luffy defeats Caesar with Grizzly Magnum and sends him flying away.
There they divide into three groups: Luffy, Sanji, Zoro, Kin'emon, and Franky head into town; Momonosuke, Chopper, Nami, and Brook protect the Sunny; and Law, Usopp and Robin deliver Caesar Clown. Group 1 goes to a restaurant where they see a blind man gambling with a great amount of wealth.
Usopp is captured and brought to Arlong Park, where Nami is accused of hiring Zoro to kill Arlong. To increase the crew's mistrust and save Usopp's life, she apparently kills him and kicks his body into the sea. Luffy and Sanji arrive; although they want to help, Nami turns them away.

Usopp's plan to use a fake "5-ton" hammer against the two fails after it gets destroyed and revealed as fake, but Chopper manages to trick Lasso into firing into the tunnels. When the two are still standing after that attack, Usopp attempts to flee, but Miss Merry Christmas catches him and taunts him by claiming that Luffy is dead.
