4, also known as Foreigner 4, is the fourth studio album by the British-American rock band Foreigner, released on July 3, 1981, by Atlantic Records.The album's name signifies that it is the band's fourth studio album and also the fact that the band's membership had reduced from six to four members.
The iconic tenor saxophone solo was performed by celebrated Motown multi-instrumentalist Junior Walker, [3] who was coincidentally performing in New York during Foreigner's album sessions and agreed to contribute. Lange was a perfectionist with Dolby, making him play some of the simple notes over and over until they were perfect.
After two albums – 1977's Foreigner and 1978's Double Vision – Gagliardi left the band in April 1979 and was replaced by Rick Wills, formerly of Small Faces. Foreigner's 1981 album 4 featured Walker's sax solo on "Urgent". [2] He later recorded his own version of the song for the 1983 All Stars's album Blow the House Down. [3] Walker's version was also featured in the 1985 Madonna film Desperately Seeking Susan. In 1983, Walker was re-signed with Motown. [1]
The band's debut album, Foreigner, was released in March 1977 and achieved significant commercial success. It was certified for sales of five million copies in the United States, remaining in the top 20 for a year and peaking at No. 4. The album also reached the top 10 in Canada and Australia and climbed to No. 1 in Norway.
