Women's fashions of the early 16th century consisted of a long gown, usually with sleeves, worn over a kirtle or undergown, with a linen chemise or smock worn next to the skin. The high-waisted gown of the late medieval period evolved in several directions in different parts of Europe.
Costume historian James Laver suggests that the mid-14th century marks the emergence of recognizable "fashion" in clothing, [1] in which Fernand Braudel concurs. [2] The draped garments and straight seams of previous centuries were replaced by curved seams and the beginnings of tailoring , which allowed clothing to more closely fit the human form.
Spinning by hand was a traditional form of women's work (illustration c. 1170). In the early Middle Ages, women's lives varied greatly dependent upon their location and status. Ecclesiastical sources offer particularly rich information about women living under Christian rule; some leftovers from the Roman era that offer clues about women elsewhere.
Costume during the thirteenth century in Europe was relatively simple in its shapes, rich in colour for both men and women, and quite uniform across the Roman Catholic world as the Gothic style started its spread all over Europe in dress, architecture, and other arts.
