The only road access is via the Saddle Road (Hawaii Route 200), which is paralleled by a tank trail. Heavy equipment is either flown into Hilo, or else shipped via barge to Kawaihae Harbor, about 40 miles (64 km) away on the Saddle Road. The trailhead is located at the Visitor Information Station of the Onizuka Center at 9,200 ft (2,804 m) ().
