The Triumph of Ferrante Gonzaga over Envy by Leone Leoni, Guastalla, Italy. He was born in Mantua, the third son of Francesco II Gonzaga and Isabella d'Este.At the age of sixteen, he was sent to the court of Spain as a page to the future emperor Charles V, to whom Ferrante remained faithful for his whole life.
Ferrante II Gonzaga became the first duke of the city, hoping to succeed in the future to the great Duchy of Mantua. Ferrante II died of plague in 1630 and was succeeded by his son, Cesare II. With him, Guastalla expanded its territory with the annexation of the lands of Dosolo, Luzzara and Reggiolo, until then owned by Mantua.
After death of his first wife, he was remarried on 23 February 1727 in Darmstadt to Theodora of Hesse-Darmstadt (6 February 1706 – 23 January 1784), the only daughter of Prince Philip of Hesse-Darmstadt and his wife, Princess Marie Therese Ernestine of Croy-Havré (1673-1714).
Ferrante died in Milan [3] [4] and his body was brought to the monastery of San Pietro in Castiglione on the evening of 15 February, before being buried according to his wishes in the Gonzaga family vault at San Francesco, Mantua on 17 February. Marie Louise Gonzaga, daughter of Prince Charles Gonzaga-Nevers, was a queen consort of Poland and grand duchess consort of Lithuania from 1645 to her death in 1667. Two daughters of the house, both named Eleanor Gonzaga, became Holy Roman Empresses, by marrying emperors Ferdinand II of Germany and Ferdinand III, Holy Roman Emperor, respectively.
