The International DuraStar line, known as the 4000 series prior to 2008, is a line of medium-duty trucks produced by Navistar International from 2001 until 2018. [1] Introduced as the successor to the International 4000 series of 1989–2001, the 4000 series was renamed the DuraStar in 2008.
The S series was a range of medium and heavy-duty conventional trucks that was introduced in 1977 to replace and widen the LoadStar and FleetStar lines. It used a new cab with flat panels and forward tilting hood in different lengths. The series was very wide, from the medium duty 1600 to the regional semi-tractor 2500 and severe-service 2600.
For the 1983 model year, Ford entered into a supply agreement with International Harvester to use the newly introduced IDI diesel V8 for 3 ⁄ 4 and 1-ton F-Series pickups and E-Series vans. While roughly matching the output of the discontinued 400 cubic-inch V8 (the engine that it replaced alongside a reintroduced 460), the 6.9L diesel offered ...
In 2004, the International 3800 ended production, replaced by the International 3300 (a cowled-chassis version of the International 4300/DuraStar). In production for over 25 years, the S-series bus chassis was the longest-lived model line ever produced by International and the final Navistar product line developed by International Harvester.
During the mid-2000s, IC began an overhaul of its product line. For 2005, the International 3300 was introduced as a cowled-chassis variant of the International 4000-series (DuraStar), becoming the first completely new cowled chassis from International since 1979. In 2006, IC produced its first small school bus, the 30-passenger BE200.
Featuring a larger and wider cab, the CO-4000 was distinguished by a large trapezoidal grille, a design feature that would be used on International cabovers into the late 1990s. For 1968, the CO-4000 was given an update, with the standard engine becoming the turbocharged IHC DVT573 diesel V8 with optional diesel Cummins and Detroit Diesel engines.
The International Harvester Company (IHC) has been building its own proprietary truck engines since the introduction of their first truck in 1907. International tended to use proprietary diesel engines. In the 1970s, IHC built the DVT 573 V-8 diesel of 240 and 260 hp (179 and 194 kW) but these were not highly regarded and relatively few were sold.
The Navistar VT engine family is a line of diesel engines that was produced by International Truck and Engine (Navistar International) from 2003 to 2016.Developed as the replacement for the T444E V8, the VT V6 and V8 diesels were the smallest diesel engines used in Navistar vehicles, slotted below the DT inline-6 engine family.
