The first temple was founded in 645 AD, which makes it the oldest-established temple in Tokyo. The most recent site, the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka, was listed in 2010. The Central Highlands and the Sinharaja Forest Reserve are natural sites, the other six are cultural. In addition, Sri Lanka has four sites on its tentative list. The country served as a member of the World Heritage Committee in the years 1983–1989. [3]

Shaivism has had a significant influence on early Sri Lankan architecture, during the reign of King Ravana , then Buddhism has also had a significant influence on Sri Lankan architecture, since it was introduced to the island in the 3rd century BCE .
The vatadage is considered to be one of ancient Sri Lanka's most prolific architectural creations; this design represented a changing perspective of stupa design independently within the island. [6] Early provincial vatadages have been in the form of a square [ 6 ] later it developed into a circular form enclosing the dagoba. [ 2 ]
