Koko the Clown was brought out of retirement from the silent days as a third character to Betty and Bimbo. By 1932, the series was at an inevitable end and instead, Betty Boop would be given her own series, with Bimbo and Koko as secondary characters.

Bimbo was initially inspired by animation director Dick Huemer's work on Mutt and Jeff, who, when working on the Out of the Inkwell series, decided to give protagonist Koko the Clown a canine companion.
Bimbo and Koko are sign painters hired to paint the lettering on the window of "Betty Boop's Dancing School". Betty Boop teaches her animal friends how to dance to the tune of "Dancing to Save Your Soul". The dancing shakes the building, which crumbles to the ground.
