CDS (Superstores International) Limited, trading as The Range, is a British variety store and garden centre retailer, originally founded as Chris Dawson Superstores (C.D.S.) in 1989. In the 1990s, the chain rebranded to 'The Range', and had expanded across the South West by the end of the decade.
The CDS Superstores name would later be changed to The Range. A 'The Range Home, Garden & Leisure' brand store was opened in Cardiff in February 2000; Dawson later bought the business park where this store sits. [8] The Range was featured in The Sunday Times Top Track 250 companies from 2003 to 2012, once ranking at number 48. [9]
The company began in 1918 as SW&Y Supply, a wholesale grocery-distributing business. In 1953, Douglas D. Brendle, the grandson of the company's founder, joined the business. He began stocking toys and houseware items, turning its Elkin warehouse into its first wholesale showroom. In 1957, Brendle began publishing the company's first catalog. [4]
Wicks 'N' Sticks began in Houston in 1968, and by 1971 had grown to 18 locations in 11 states.
