Backwoods Savage said: ↑. Red maple (soft maple) is excellent firewood. It's only drawback is that it does not keep a fire as long as the heavy hitters like oak or even hard maple. There is a terrible misconception about this maple. People think it does not burn as hot as oak which is definitely not true.

Wood drys really fast at first. Maple will lose 1/2 the water that its going to lose in about 2 sunny summer weeks. It also starts at about 85% fresh off the stump so I'm not so sure your readings were accurate. Keep in mind a moisture meter is worthless above the mid thirties, +- species dependent.

USA. Nov 20, 2017. #5. Negatives - As stated above, you have to use more of it due to low density, Rots quickly if its not split and is uncovered, some are huge so can be hard to handle. Plusses - Good smell when burned (my opinion obviously), leaves very little ash in the stove so less cleaning, not the hardest to split (not the easiest either ...

Any maple, even box elder or silver maple, is decent firewood. I have a couple cords of both for 2016-2017 already. I guess that depends on what other woods are available to you, not a big fan of either Box Elder or Silver Maple. Never burnt Norway Maple but it is right up there below Sugar on the charts that have it listed.

Probably a little less than half a cord but for the life of me I can't find anything to tell me how dense this wood is. I know its ornamental so that kills a lot of info but this stuff is heavy even when its dry (standing dead).

New Hampshire. Feb 15, 2010. #5. Red maple is fine firewood, but has a lot of water content. Be sure to dry it for at least a summer, otherwise it just sort of sizzles away like green oak. You can tell a red maple from other maples in the spring by the color of the bud tips. Red = red. Green = other.

Cut a small blow-down on my wood permit and just had the pleasure of splitting/stacking it. Maybe 15 rounds, 10-14" in diameter. Every piece split with one wack of the maul except one piece (took 2).
