The park is located across the Mississippi River from the city's downtown riverfront. Its facilities include walking trails, fishing docks, a beach, and a disc golf course. The park is named after Albert Wells Pettibone (1827–1915), a former mayor of the city of La Crosse who privately funded the creation of the park.
The La Crosse Convention and Visitors Bureau building is located at the north end of the park. It was originally built in 1924 as a fish control lab. [ 5 ] The building was home to the Riverside Museum from 1990 until it moved in February 2020.

All of the town's population resides in its eastern portion, on the section of French Island denoted French Island CDP by the United States Census Bureau. Some of the island is part of the city of La Crosse.
Located in western Wisconsin, the district comprises all of Vernon County and part of southwest La Crosse County. It includes part of the south side of the city of La Crosse and the cities of Hillsboro, Viroqua, and Westby, along with the villages of Chaseburg, Coon Valley, Genoa, La Farge, Ontario, Readstown, and Stoddard.
