The style of pottery created by the Jōmon people is identifiable for its "cord-marked" patterns, hence the name "Jōmon" (縄文, "straw rope pattern").The pottery styles characteristic of the first phases of Jōmon culture used decoration created by impressing cords into the surface of wet clay, and are generally accepted to be among the oldest forms of pottery in East Asia and the world. The Hollow Dogū (中空土偶, chūkū dogū) is a Japanese dogū or clay figurine of the Late Jōmon period (c. 1500–1300 BC). A chance find from what was to become the Chobonaino Site in Hakodate, Hokkaido, it is exhibited at the Hakodate Jōmon Culture Center.
They are considered by many to be representative of goddesses. Many have large abdomens associated with pregnancy, suggesting that the Jomon considered them mother goddesses. [4] According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, these figurines "suggest an association with fertility and shamanistic rites". [7]
