Hardboard is similar to particle board and medium-density fiberboard, but is denser, stronger and harder because it is made out of exploded wood fibers that have been highly compressed. [ 3 ] The density of hardboard is higher than 500 kg/m 3 (31 lb/cu ft), [ 4 ] usually about 800–1,040 kg/m 3 (50–65 lb/cu ft). [ 5 ]
Although similar manufacturing processes are used in making all types of fibreboard, MDF has a typical density of 600–800 kg/m 3 or 0.022–0.029 lb/in 3, in contrast to particle board (500–800 kg/m 3) and to high-density fibreboard (600–1,450 kg/m 3). In addition, MDF typically has an MOR of 40 MPa and an MOE of 3 GPa.
The most common dimension is 1.2 by 2.4 metres (3 ft 11 in × 7 ft 10 in) or the slightly larger imperial dimension of 4 feet × 8 feet. Plies vary in thickness from 1.4 mm to 4.3 mm. The number of plies—which is always odd—depends on the thickness and grade of the sheet. Roofing can use the thinner 16-millimetre (5 ⁄ 8 in) plywood.
Laminate panels are used instead of plywood because of their resistance to impact, weather, moisture, shattering in cold (ductility), and chemicals. Laminate panel layers (called veneers) are glued together with adjacent plies having their grain at right angles to each other for greater strength.
