One contestant plays the game at a time, and is given an initial stake of £50. However, an incorrect answer at any time ends the game and sends the contestant home with nothing.

A Christmas bonus of £10 is paid to the recipients of long-term benefit in the United Kingdom. This was established by the Pensioners and Family Income Supplement Payments Act 1972 as a one-off payment which was repeated by the Heath government in 1973 and 1974. It was then repeated by the Labour Government in 1977 and 1978.
The value landed on would be the amount for the normal catchphrases in that round. At first, the minimum value for the first two rounds was £10 and £20 in each round thereafter. After the second episode, the minimum value reduced to £5 until 1994. The maximum value started at £50 in round one and increased £50 for each round thereafter.
