In the Michigan legislature, the township lies in the 73rd and 75th state house districts, and the 28th state senate district. At the federal level, the township is included within Michigan's 7th congressional district.
The county is named for Stevens T. Mason, Governor of Michigan from 1835 to 1840. [5] It was created by the Michigan Legislature in 1840 as Notipekago County, [6] then renamed Mason County in 1843.
